    Gators Stop the Pinapple Express

And so here we are...another season starting with very high expectations.  We have SEC championship dreams, and are making plans for the BCS championship in Miami.  I'm getting ahead of myself again.  Let's talk about this week.

Well not much has changed on the bus, not that it needs to.  The bus was good enough to bring us a national championship as is.  But, in an effort to always try and improve, we did do a few things.  First off, we upgraded thekegerator.  The old one was a conversion I did on a mini fridge, and as suc it only accomodated pony kegs.  That's fine, except the selection in the ponies is somewhat lacking.  So the new one is a little larger and, while it was full of bottles this week, will serve up its first few kegs next week against Miami.  It should also look more "Gator-ified" next week...stay tuned for that.

The next big upgrade came to the video setup.  The TV from the past couple of seasons took a beating, thanks especially to the constant in and out of the component video cables.  So this year Vince added a new high strength HDMI cable as well as a new 42" 1080p LCD. Take a look at it in action in the pictures.

So, with the bus all sparkling clean, we headed out for the first tailgate (oh, and game too). The only thing hotter than a football game in August in Florida is a football game at noon in August in Florida.  But for once, the opposing team is usedto the heat and humidity.  But I'm sure they at least get a sea breeze in Hawaii.  So with the early start time, we made an early entrance just after 10am.  Setup was a snap and we enjoyed College Gameday and a little of the hurricane-rescheduled LSU game before kickoff of our season opener.

After a quick downpour, the game got underway.  After a slow first quarter, the gators got it rolling with a strong defense and an even stronger running game; two things that have been lacking the past year.  Sure, this isn't the Hawaii of last year, but it was a better test than a Western Kentucky (which is turns out isn't even a state!).

Due to the heat and rain, most people showed back up to the bus around the third quarter.  And to our delight, Raycom sports now broadcasts the games in HD!  Very nice.  We enjoyed the end of the game there.  But even more entertaining was watching Cam disect the pig he'd been smoking since the evening before.  Typically you face the knife away from yourself when slicing, but Cam's method worked too.  Though not all of the blood belonged to the pig at serving time, I unfortunatly did not find a championship ring in my pulled pork.  Oh well.

We played some chase quarters and then some beer pong before calling it quits.  All in all it was a great tailgate.  It's nice to have some lower-key tailgates mixed in with the big time blowouts, the likes of which we'll see next week when Miami comes to town.  I'm not sure which type of hurricane annoys me more: the tropical ones or the fair weather ones (the UM fans).  At least this game is early in their season, so Miami will still have fans.  They only stick around all year if the canes are in contention, which hasn't happened since they lost to the championship game whipping dogs of the SEC, also known as the Ohio State Buckeyes.  I forgot they actually knew how to win a big game (even if it did take more than four quarters).

So that's all.  I'll try to give some details for next week's party beforehand so you can plan your day.  Go Gators!

So Much to Blog, so Little Time

Sorry I haven't kept up on the blog this year...I've been too hungover until this morning.  I'm good now.

You see, we've decided to err on the side of too much beer this year, meaning I've got a keg on ice in my garage that I've been nursing all week.  It's a glorious thing to have cold draft beer at home.  Simply glorious.

Anyhow, one could argue the first two weeks were preseason for us just as it was for the Gators.  The first week was a comedy of errors.  First off, the game was at noon, so there was only a little bit of time for tailgating.  First there was the keg fountain.  One of the connections of the beer hose wasn't tight after the cleaning, resulting in a lovely beer shower.  We eventually got that worked out.  Then there was the dish...we had no problem getting a signal in our dry run, but we sure did in week one.  Eventually that got resolved too, just in time for the end of gameday and the beginning of our game.

Week two was much better.  We rearranged the bus to put ourselves parallel with University Ave as opposed to perpendicular.  Made for instand dish signal and a nice buffer from our adoring fans.  Remember the bus we parked next to in Atlanta for the final four (see pics)?  They've come to the same lot as us.  It's like a school bus showroom over there.  Now if only they'd lay off the train horn they just installed.  Jeesh!

So this is the big weekend where it really starts.  We'll be out there in time to watch gameday from start to finish.  Then there are a few other good games we'll be able to watch before our kickoff.  As always, the game will be on in HD at the bus for those of you without tickets.  And the party will continue on in to the evening after the game.

We're getting bbq catered this week, so we'd like some help cash wise if you're going to partake.  As always, please feel free to tip if you'd just like some beer.  But we're thinking a $10 all you can drink/eat plan this week (including mixed drinks in the bus), to see how that goes.  Thanks for your help!

So we'll see you out there this weekend!  Pics will be up soon, I promise.

    Where's the Party At?

It's that time again!  This was a big weekend for the bus, getting all primped and primed for the big season deubt next weekend.  I'll have more on that later, but first wanted to let you know where the party is at this year.  We've moved down the street to free ourselves from the volume-czar.  We're now right across university ave from the president's house (allowing us to stick it to the man throughout the season).  The house we'll be at is great, and we've got a spot right on the road.  He sells parking on gameday for $20, which is cheaper than any of the houses around him.  Get there early if you want to park in the same lot.

We plan to be there all season, but check back here for any updates.  The map is attached below.  We're at the orange and blue bullseye.

Also, since the game this week is at 12:30p, we'll do most of our tailgating after the victory.  We will get there in time for college gameday, and will have the tv setup during the game most likely.  Then we'll watch the 3:30 games before packing in.  Look for breakfast items and screwdrivers in the morning, with the keg tapping after the game.

    See you there!

I'm Blogging Like it's My Job!

Well it is!  Just wanted to give a plug to me.  My company, 352 Media Group, has a new blog up with posts related to Web development.  My specific portion is related to my role as VP of Marketing, and I talk mostly about interactive marketing news.  Please take a moment to check it out, as well as any of the other posters (a collection of talented web designers and programmers).

    A Great Dress Rehearsal

My last post was in April.  It's been a nice break.  But now its back to business.  With the season a mere 11 weeks out, its time to get the wheels in motion, excuse the pun.

One of the priorities coming off of last year was to upgrade the parking situation.  Last year we were desperate.  All of our energy was in getting the bus itself done, so we took the first spot that looked alright.  Sure, it was a nice reserved spot in a big lot close to the action.  That wasn't the issue.  The issue was a whiney attendant who would ask us to turn the volume down on the TV!  Um, this is a tailgate lot, right?  That, coupled with the very high price tag, led us to look elsewhere.

So we made up a flier (see pic at the bottom of this entry).  It laid out what we needed, and what we'd offer in return.  In short, we needed a great space across from the stadium.  We offered money, fun, and even some beer, to the poor college students that live in those coveted homes.  Well, the bait worked, and fast!  I got an email from an interested party.  Well, after some back and forth, it turned out he was more than just any interested party.  Our new friend, Cam Brewer, with a great house right across from the president's pad, is also the owner of a ring.  A national championship ring.  Yes, that's right.  He was a member of the storied 2006 Gator football team.

So, after a few years in the military and a few more playing God's game, he decided to take it easy.  So he wanted the fan experience, and I think we can help there! We worked with him to reserve two spots at the southeast (closest to the stadium) side of his property.  As you can see from the photos on the left, that spot nestles up against a creek and a large deck.  The street is on the third site, and the TV side of the bus will have plenty of room on a level, gravel surface.  The picnic table in the pics will be moved back, and will offer even more sitting area.  Our host is really going above and beyond, offering use of his restroom and power outlets.

We conducted a dress rehearsal to make sure the spot would work.  It needs to be much more than just a parking spot.  It needs a clear view to the Southwest for the dish signal.  It needs good shade for prime TV viewing.  It needs room to manuver in to, and room to congregate around it.  This spot has all that (and the creek).

So after a great practice run with full dish signal, we headed back to base camp.  On the way we stopped by the Hoggetown Ale Works shop, our kegerator superstore, to get a cleaning kit for the beer lines.  The beer currently in the lines has called them home since Superbowl Sunday.  That extra fermentation time has made it pretty nasty.  Anyhow, we ran in to our second Gator football player there!  He and his family toured and signed the Bus.  James Smith, number 43, is our teams long snapper and a fullback.

Quick side note.  I've been saying for years now that if I ever have a son, I'm not going to play catch with him.  Instead, I'm going to teach him to snap.  He will never face me when we have a toss.  My child wil be the premier long snapper in football.  It is an underated position, but the LS in the NFL still make at least the league minimum.  I'm so proud of my unborn and unconcieved son!

I digress.  Anyhow, James knows Cam, our parking buddy, and said he and a few teammates would come by after a game to check out the goings on.  Wow.  Good stuff!

Well its late and I have an early flight, so I'd better sign off.  I just wanted you to feel the relief I felt knowing the bus will be in a great spot for the year!  Go Gators!  The season can't come soon enough!

Gator Appreciation Day @ Arc Jacksonville

The moral of this story is that the blog actually has fans.  There are people that come to it on a weekly basis, hungering for new pictures and posts.  I did not know that until recently.

So I got an email from my aunt Betty in Jacksonville.  She and her coworkers apparently read the blog.  Good to know someone besides my mother-in-law does!  Anyhow, she works at an organization called Arc Jacksonville.  You can read more about the organization here, but in a nutshell they provide advocacy and quality services that enable people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to achieve their full potential, enhance their quality of life and be active participants in their communities. (yes, that was a copy and paste from their site).

So back to her email.  The Arc was just as caught up in this whole crazy Gator Nation as everyone else.  Winning three championships in 366 days will do that to you.  So they wanted to host a "Gator Appreciation Day" with the people they serve.  What a great idea!  And what could make people appreciate tha Gators more than a short bus?  Nothing was the answer there in case you didn't realize it was a rhetorical question.

So we loaded up the bus and drove to Jax.  Jacksonville, that is.  Swimming Pools, movie stars.

We made it there just in time for lunch, as the Arc crew was setting up a feast fit for a king...hot dogs, chips, assorted cookies, the works!  We erected the flag (I'm just going to skip right over that one), turned on the music and it was time to start appreciating.  The Arcians (just made that word up) came out, grabbed some grub, and took turns touring and signing the bus.

Most seemed impressed, save for the two FSU fans in attendance. I've never seen someone angrier at a bus.  The guys like Abe and Lester and the rest of the gang had a great time sitting inside the bus and listening to music.  The fans outside also had fun when Megan switched the tunes from the Gator fight songs to Fergilicious.  Those Arcians can dance!

The Arc staff even had "Go Gators" rally towels donated for the event, which made a great takeaway.  Megan and I were even asked to autograph one.  That brings me back to the moral of the post.  We have fans!  Or, maybe it's just "fan."  We can't be sure yet.

Thanks again to everyone at Arc, especially Aunt Betty, for inviting us over.  It was our pleasure, and we will see you again in the Fall for sure at the Florida v. Georgia game in Jax!

The Bus Was Featured On The News!

Go to this link, http://www.news4jax.com/video/index.html, and scroll through the videos until you see the glorious bus with the caption, "Gator Fans Transform School Bus Into 'Urban Transit'."

    Do You Believe In Unlikelyhoods?!

It went exactly as planned.  Sure, we weren't confident the plan would work, but we had hope.  And enough hope, love, and good wishes, combined with better players, coaches, and a completely overrated opponent, led to the amazing outcome.

    Pictures to come soon!
    January 08

    It's Game Day, Baby!

So here it is.  This is the day that the Gators have made.  Let us rejoice and be glad.

In this inperfect system, this is as close as we can get to the perfect game.  The winners of the SEC, the best conference in all the land, will face the overrateed and overhyped "champions" of a league with no championship game and no real teams to speak of.  True, their stats are better, but even I could win the heisman playing against pop warner teams all year.  And I heard Jim Tressel is a homo.  It's a proven fact.

So now, as we head on to the stadium, we think fondly of all of the other teams that have ever even played for a national championship in both football and basketball in the same year.  Oh, wait.  There was only one team, Ohio State.  And they lost in the bball championship.  We're breaking ground here.

Tonight the hammer will fall.  The smack will be laid.  A can of wupass will be set down, opened up, and sprayed wildly with reckless abandon on any and all who get near it.  Cliche's will be cliched.  Good luck, and God Bless the Gators.  And God, please punish the superbius Buckeyes.

    SEC part deux

Onto the National Championships... our challenge to Michigan was not heeded, however we won out in the BCS battle to Glendale.  The Urban Transit will not be making the trip cross-country, although all possibilities for a trip were considered:

    - Amtrak
    - flat bed truck
    - $1000 in gas each way
    - teleportation
    - hiring Cleve, Mr. Wilson's handyman to shuttle us around the greater U.S.

All options were just not as good as staying in Vegas from Dec. 28th until game time.  So, you know where we'll be - at the $10 blackjack table in the NYNY hotel.  If we win enough, maybe we'll fly home and get the bus.

    --------------------------------

PS - we got our first "Traffic Citation" in the fabulous state of Georgia.  Too bad it was just for a broken headlight and not the myriad of other violations - tapped keg, open bottles of liquor, no seatbelts, 18 IKEA shelves blocking the actual seating.

    OFFICIAL CHALLENGE TO MICHIGAN

The BCS is terrible. We both know it.  They might pick us today.  That wouldn't be fair to you.  They might pick you, and that wouldn't be fair to us.  So I say we take matters in to our own hands.  I hereby challenge the University of Michigan to a football game against the University of Florida to take place two weeks prior to the OSU BCS national title game.  We can play in a neutral field to be arranged later.  Do I have the authority to do this?  Of course not. Is it the right thing to do?  Of course it is.

The gauntlet has been thrown.  Let's settle this like men, on the field.  Screw the BCS.

    UF v UGA

There is no greater rival for the Florida Gators than the dirty dawgs of Georgia.  They owned  us in the 70’s and 80’s.  We’ve owned them since.  And now with the addition of the Urban Transit bus to the Gator Nation,  we will own them for the next decade.

The trip to Jacksonville is only the second road trip for the bus, but a manageable one at that.  Though UGA fans complain it isn’t a neutral site (it’s a 1.5 hour trip for us and a ~4 hour drive for them) it seemed pretty evenly split in Jax.  We had a full load in the bus on the way over, though the estrogen level was abnormally high.  You would think that would be a great thing, but remember what happens when women get together in large packs, often called a gaggle of gals.  In a bus made for football games with beer, brats, and big screens, the women mixed fruity cocktails and bounced to the beat of Justin Timberlake who has apparently launched a campaign to bring sexy back.  After several bathroom stops we finally hit Duval county.

We made the trip over  Friday evening arriving to a hero’s welcome.  We pulled in to the valet area of the Hyatt hotel, adjacent to the party headquarters for the fans.  Last week we split the amplifier in order to get more juice out of each set of speakers (interior and exterior).  The result is, in a word, loud.   Aided by the echo of the portico, we led the drunken gator faithful in a thundering cheer before unloading our luggage.

There wasn’t much happening Friday night as the rain dampened the Jacksonville Landing, an outdoor strip on the river with bars and live music.  It was not a big deal as Friday has always been the night for the UGA fans to party, where the Florida fans tend to celebrate after the victory on Saturday.  We spent some time in the hotel bar before tucking in for the night.  We had an early wakeup call coming so we could ensure ourselves a prime spot for a full day of fun.

We woke up on time ready to go.  Joy, Vince, and Lauren stayed at another hotel down the road and called to say they were pulling in.  We were perched up on the 18th floor, and I must say there was no better feeling than looking down at the bus from a high as it rounded the corner.  Megan and Brooke stayed behind to grab the Hooters wings as we went to setup.  We had purchased a parking pass ahead of time so we were guaranteed a spot.  We hung the pass on the mirror and were waived right in.  However the road just kept getting closer to the stadium.  I showed an attendant the pass and he waved us along further.  There was no doubt we were not in the right lot, but we were closer, and it was now free.  I was able to take the pass back out to the street and scalp it.  Great deal!

We were right on the south side of alltel stadium, nestled between the river and the endzone.  We were able to finagle an end spot to setup our gear.  You should’ve seen the jaws drop as we placed the plasma screen on the side of the bus.  Once again the bus was the center of attention.

We tailgated from about 10am right on through the game.  We had a variety of activities setup.  Megan and Brooke spend much of the day dancing, as there weren’t really any games on that warranted listening to.  Sherrie and company spend the time at (and presumably under) the beer pong table of some UGA fans.  Vince and I enjoyed the beer and wings and played some sort of bean bag toss game with our neighbors.  The world’s largest cocktail party lived up to the hype once again.

Megan and I went to the game along with some others while the majority stayed behind to watch from the comfort of the bus.  Sure, they had a better view at the bus, but we had $4 hot dogs, so of course we win.  Plus it’s an NFL stadium, so there were options like outback steakhouse and other things that have no place in a sports stadium.  Sure, they’re nice, but there should only be dogs, cotton candy, nachos, and peanuts.  That’s it.

Well it was another victory for the Gators, all but sealing a trip to Atlanta later this year for the conference championship game.  But our tailgate was far from over.  It was now dark, and the dance party extended well in to the evening.  We eventually packed up for a ride over to the landing for the after party.  If you’ve ever been to the game, you know there is a pilgrimage the likes of moses and the Israelites heading from the stadium about a mile and a half to the landing.  Vince suggested we offer some Gator fans a ride.  We had the room, and why shouldn’t we give the kids the experience of a lifetime?  Not a moment later a girl stuck out her thumb asking for a ride.  She and her friends were in Gator gear, so we opened the door and invited them in.  Little did I know how many of them there were when I made the offer.  I kept trying to close the door, but they kept coming in.  We had to exercise several of the bus’ school rules including no smoking, no standing in front of the white line, and respecting the driver and your fellow passengers.

We repeated the previous night’s grand entrance through the Hyatt entrance and dropped of our load and found a safe and secure lot to trust the bus to.  We went inside where we were fortunate enough to watch FSU drop to .500 for the year.  Why there were FSU fans in the Hyatt on Florida Georgia weekend is a mystery to me.  But they were there and obnoxious.  That is until the game tying field goal was blocked.  I wonder if anyone has told Bobby Bowden yet.  No need to trouble him with details.

When that game and the USC v UT game wrapped up we headed over to the landing.  I tried to do the math and determined the landing officially made a shitload, charging $10 a head for entrance.  That’s before paying $5 for a draft beer.  Hopefully that went to security, as things have gotten pretty brutal at the event for the previous couple of years.  We were safe and sound on a landing (at the landing!) of the stairway where we had room to dance and a great people watching spot.  We saw some interesting things.  For example,  we witnessed the universal truth that if there is a camera, beer, and rap that two girls will kiss.  And guys will inevitably chant things at them, never satisfied where they leave off.  We were also fortunate to see someone get served.  They recovered nicely, serving their opponent back before it was on.  It was quite the dance-off.

We were also fortunate enough to be visited by one of the most drunk people I’ve ever seen upright.  I’ve had people ask to borrow my phone before, but never my phone battery.  It was very difficult for me to explain that my battery was about 40% larger than his.  He was convinced we could make it fit, but alas he was wrong.  We got some great camera phone shots that will be posted as soon as Joy figures out how to get them out of her phone.  I suggested we simply shake the phone until they fall out, but that hasn’t worked yet.

We ended the weekend with a trip to Denny’s, capping off one of the worst weekends of eating I’ve ever

had the privilege to participate in.  Why is it that things are just better fried?  I don’t know, but they are.  How else has chicken fried steak been so successful?

So next week is Vandy, and then we have South Carolina and West Carolina at home before heading to FSU and hopefully Atlanta.  We’re not making the trip to Nashville, so we have two weeks for some final adjustments before that grueling final leg of the season.  Vince and I have a great idea for rearranging some of the components and wiring to allow for better plasma storage on road trips as well as game time DJ’ing.  I’ll be sure to post pics and progress reports.  Go Gators!

    Great Google Rankings!

I just checked our site stats and found we're number 7 in google if you type in "Bernie Machen Needs To Go Home and Have a Beer."  Not sure how popular the keyword is, but obvioulsy someone searched for it.  I'll get the uga blog up later this evening.

    UF v Auburn

Last weekend was the first road trip for the Urban Transit bus.  We all knew she was ready for it, but we were still nervous.  Would the new engine hold up?  Would we be welcomed as conquerors or attacked by natives?  Did we have enough beer?

We started on the road at about noon on Friday for the roughly six hour drive to Auburn, Alabama.  We were planning to take I-75 up to I-10 and then back roads for a nice scenic drive.  This was our first real experience on the interstate with the bus.  Apparently when the bus hits about 75 mph, a mast is automatically erected on the roof.  Fairies then raise a towering sail designed to catch any cross wind.  After tacking our way along I-10 for a few miles, we decided it was time to hit the back way.  The bus handled much better on the rural highways.

The ride itself was great.  Megan’s good friend and coworker Brooke had gone up to visit family on Wednesday, so she took the TV, chairs, and tents.  That made for a roomy interior.  We brought along another flat panel and the xBox with NCAA football.  We also found a semi-permanent spray paint and stenciled “Stop War Eagle Tigers,” on the stop sign.  It was interesting to watch the thumbs up slowly turn to middle fingers the further North we got on the Florida-Georgia Parkway.

As with any road trip in the South, it is required you stop for at least one meal at either a non-chain bbq joint with a pig on the sign or a country buffet named after either someone’s grandmother or something equally as “country.”  We were fortunate enough to come across the Trough on the river in Georgia just south of Eufala where we crossed in to Alabama.  You know you’ve found the right restaurant when a record scratches to a halt and everyone looks up at the door with a look as if to say “who the hell’s kin are you?”  We were those people…he ones without overalls, those annoying shirts with fish on them, or plaid.  But as is always the case in the South, we were welcomed in with open arms and mason jars full of sweet tea.  Since we were on the river, we decided to go for the shrimp and grits.  There was just the right amount of cheese in the grits, and the hush puppies were killer.  It was a great stop, topped off with some bananna pudding and a tour of the on-site country store.

It was dark when we neared Auburn, and we found the only thing worse than the interstate was driving the bus through winding two-lane roads you are unfamilar with.  Trying to balance not killing deer with not tipping over is hard.  We finally made it to our destination, which was Brooke's cousin's house.  We were part of about 20 people staying there, in what can only be described as a plantation.  We were placed in the attic which was more than enough room.  Only problem was you had to go through the master bedroom to get to it, which made for some interested navy seal-esque maneuvering.  We also had about 7 kids under 5 in the place to contend with, and a flip-flop thief of a dog.  As horrible as it is to say, I felt like Anne Franke up in that attic, knowing I couldn't come down in the because we didn't know anyone, had to be quiet and still so we didn't wake the kids, and didnt want to walk in on anything in the master bedroom.  The only thing we were missing was a bookcase that doubled as a door, and of course the Gestapo.

Finally game day rolled around.  Though Vince and his BFF Jeremy had staked a spot in the RV lot, we decided to try to get closer to the action.  Auburn has an interesting tradition of allowing anyone to stake their claim at 4pm on Friday.  It is just like the Oklahoma land race, except with much less organization.  We saw several great empty tailgate locations, but they were guarded by cinder blocks, tape, chairs, coolers, or people.  There is an unspoken rule that you don't take someone else's spot which is great, but the people with the prime spots should really be there to enjoy them or give them up to others.

Anyhow, we noticed an oasis completely surrounded by other tailgaters on a grassy, shady hill.  Hats off to the Auburn fans who helped us navigate through the tailgates to get to the middle.  Our dish found a signal through the uprights of two tall pines, and we were in business.  It quickly became evident that Auburn fans had never seen a tailgating machine as lovely as the Urban Transit.  They flocked like mosquitoes to the bug zapper (which I'm sure many own) to see our TV, drool over our keg, and to kiss our feet.  We humored them by allowing them to watch the UGA Vandy game over our shoulders as we ate the hooters wings Megan and Brooke had picked up.  It was a great time!

Our neighbors really made the event great.  To one side we had a group of UF students who had rented an RV for the trip.  That was especially fun since that is what Vince and I and a group of other Gators had done in 2001.  It brought back some great memories.  On the other side, a trio of Gators setup a beer pong table.  We had all the Gator fans sign the roof of the bus, a tradition we’d started the week earlier.  The road was on another side of us, with a really nice and clean portable trailer restroom.  To our rear was the hospitable group of Auburn tailgaters that had helped us to park.  They turned out to be professional tailgaters like us, led by a guy named Joe.  They told us about their site at www.auburntailgaters.com.  What was especially amusing was that their fight song horn was on the same frequency as ours.  You can imagine our surprise when we hit the button expecting to hear beautiful sounds, but were instead bombarded with an evil overture of Tiger pride.

All was going great.  We had the music pumping, the Bama Ole Miss game in HD, and Gators flocking to the tailgate.  However some of those Gators came pre-lubricated with plenty of beer, which led to a problem.  I’m just going off of what I’m told, so I’ll leave the names out.  One of our Gator Nation kept taunting a group of Tigers a few tailgates over from us.  Apparently he was rude, but it was taken well.  That is, until he made some remarks to one guy’s girlfriend.  What the Gator didn’t know is that the guy was just off the plane back from Iraq.  As his friend later put it, “He was hungry for either p*ssy or death.”  He chose death.

I was in the bus messing with the ipod when I saw the Gator come flying towards the bus.  He was being tackled by a member of our great armed forces.  Everyone around had enough sense to not get involved in the brawl, but rather to try to stop it.  Problem was the Gator’s buddy wanted to be a hero and pulled a knife.  About five tigers, also allegedly war veterans, planted him in the ground while a third Gator got in to the mix.  At least he was smart enough to bring only his fists.  The outnumbered Gators were sent packing by the sober ones in the group of tigers.  They should count their blessings that the cops who were patrolling the tailgate only minutes earlier weren’t still around!

Though this was a blemish on an otherwise great tailgate, it did have a silver lining.  I went over to the Tigers involved in the fight and made sure they knew that the actions of those idiots had nothing to do with us, and in no way represented the average Gator fan.  They were great about it, and accepted our invitation for a beer from the bus.  After talking with them, we were confident the bus was safe out there by itself while we enjoyed the game.

Before we made the walk to the stadium, we were invited by Joe at the Auburn tailgate to come enjoy a gameday tradition.  Their group handed out what looked to be about 100 shots of “hot damn” to the fans.  One of the groups elders quieted the crowd to make what can only be described as a sermon.  I didn’t record the toast, but if I may summarize:

“Last week (when Auburn fell to Arkansas), I felt lower than a whale’s dick.  Today I want to pass that feeling on, and to regain the glory to Jordan-Hare Stadium.  Blah Blah, War Eagle!”

We yelled “Go Gators” and slammed our shots.  It was a cool experience.  Thanks again to Joe and the group for that!

And then there was the game.  Why do you pass on 3rd and 2 from the six when you are only down by 2 in the third quarter and your defense is playing great?  Who knows.  Oh well.

The walk back to the tailgate was a long one.  For some reason, Auburn fans focused on shutting down Tebow, with chants of overrated, etc.  I found this especially odd, considering Tebow had three rushes averaging six yards per carry with one touchdown.  Leak deserved the taunts, going only 9 for 17 with 113 measly yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, a “fumble,” and -21 yards “rushing.”

We dragged ourselves back to the house prepared to forgo the stealth walk through the master suite by staying in the bus.  When we parked in the cul-de-sac in front of the estate, we were surprised to see a car running with its lights on parked in front of us.  It was a quiet neighborhood, and it was after 1am.  We peeked in the window to see a guy passed out in the reclined driver’s seat.  The people we stayed with were up and called the cops, because after the knife fight and the beating we took in the stadium, we weren’t about to take our chances waking a drunk.  The guy ended up taking off before the cops arrived, but we did our good deed for the day by getting the tag number.  I’m sure he wasn’t the only drunk on the street that night!  With everyone up, we were able to sleep in the warmth of the house.

The drive back was uneventful.  The bus made it fine, despite one of the exterior speakers trying to jump ship.  We used the washable spray paint to add tears to the Gator on the bus.  We also learned that God hates food, or at least that’s what the people in Alabama and Georgia think.  Sure, we’d expect Chic-fil-a would be closed, but we wanted country cookin, not Mr. Fil-a’s fried goodness.  We passed Aunt Momma’s Kitchen, Terry’s BBQ, The Home of the Cowboy Burger, and several others with no luck.  We ended up settling for a country buffet in Madison, Florida.  The country just happened to be China.  Thankfully they are Godless, and like to eat on Sundays.  Sweet and Sour Chicken was hot and soft, with a good layer of crunch on the outside.  To die for.

We have a bye week to recover and make some minor tweaks to the bus, and then we face a UGA team in Jax who is coming off a big loss.  We’ll let you know before then where we’ll be.  Go Gators, and f@ck the BCS!

    Bama v UF 2006

We've all seen the picture of the Native American Chief Iron Eyes Cody with a lone tear rolling down his cheek.  The tired look in his soul, his flowing black hair.  It is the kind of image that touches every man (excluding of course General Custer).  Well I saw something equally as disturbing early Saturday as we pulled the bus in to the parking lot for our weekly tailgating festivities.  A lone bama fan stood atop his truck.  His long mullet fell on his narrow shoulders.  He wore strangler jeans and a tattered Bama jersey.  His face was leathery like the indian's but not from years atop a horse on dusty trails.  No, this guy obviously smoked several cartons of menthols each day in an attempt to escape the pain he must feel.

He yelled to me from high atop his truck.  "Roll Tide!"  I laughed and looked away, but he wouldn't have it.  He had to take it to the next level.  He pointed at the number twleve on his jersey and told me that was how many national championships they had.  I pointed out our last one was more recent, then asked him if the twelve really implied how many teeth he had remaining.  That's when it happened.  A single tear rolled down his dirty face.  It fell from his cheek right in to his can of Old Milwaukee.  The irnoy was overpowering.  His beer was named after the Milwaukee band of the Potawatomi Indians who settled in Wisconson after being thrown from their condos in downtown Chicago sometime in the 1950's.  Both men had struggled equally, though in different ways.  The Bama fan had somehow managed to survive to adulthood amidst incest, hunting rifles, chew, and many other dangers that a young man in Northern Alabama faces everyday.  The Indian chief had seen someone litter.  I can only imagine the pain.  Nevermind...I just read online the Chief Iron Eyes Cody was an actor and not really an indian.  Well screw him and the Bama guy then.

Anyhow, we rolled in to the tailgate late, around noon.  The party was already going, and people were standing around our parking spot looking lost without the bus to guide them.  We were late partly because we slept in, and partly because Megan picked up a small fraternity on the way to the tailgate (see pics).  Parking took a little longer with more cars in the lot, but we got there.  Satellite and beer setup now takes about 5 minutes.  We were in business quickly.  This week, since the game was at 3:30p, we decided not to bbq.  Instead we had more donuts than a simpsons episode.

If you recall from the last entry, this week's festivities was set to include a bartender and a dj.  The dance floor, or "parking space" as some called it, was packed.  Joy, who seems to wake up drunk somehow, took full advantage, grinding with any girl that walked by.  I don't say that as a bad thing.

The ivory tower that is our tailgate almost came toppling down.  I looked back from the dance floor to see a uniformed agent had infiltrated our setup.  Upon further investigation, I learned he and his associates were with the state branch of the ATF.  Luckily we were blessed with the precense of two lawyers.  One had enough liquid courage, or faith in the law I suppose, to remind the agents that they were not welcomed on private property and that the precense of alcohal alone was not probable cause.  Well that scared them away, at least until they came back about 15 minutes later to check ID's again.  They told us the University of Florida asked them to check on our lot.  Honestly that was the best honor we could've ever received!  If Bernie Machen, the ultra-conservative University president, thinks our tailgate is over the top, then we must be doing something right!

All in all it was a great tailgate.  Not as long as the others since the game time was earlier, but still fun.  We left to go to the game while others stayed behind to watch it at the bus.  As it turned out, they couldn't get the game at the tailgate, and the crew went over to Gator City to watch.  That was especially disappointing for the two ladies that were in the bathroom when the drunken crew left.  They said they returned to the tailgate and it appeared a tornado had gone through.  Everything was left out, except of course for the TV and the grill.  What do those two things have in common you ask?  They both belong to Joy and Vince, who led the hurried clean up, and didn't seem to appreciate the value of the table I spent precious days hand crafting.  Oh well.  Kate and Brooke were good enough to put everything else away.  It was all safe when we returned after the smackdown on Bama for the post game party.  We ordered some pizzas from Italian Gator and watched the OSU game in brilliant HD.  It is interesting to note that we called papa johns who is not 5 blocks from the tailgate, who informed us that they wouldn't make us a pizza. But we could come pick out one from what they had sitting around.  We opted the for less rude Italian Gator who just insisted that adding pepperoni would be the most difficult thing in the world, and that's why they could only do cheese.  I can only imagine the stress of a pizza chef.

As a preface to the story of the drive home, I should mention the Gator fight song car horn vince purchased over a month ago finally came in this week.  We installed it (if by install you mean rested it on the engine under the hood with no actual braces or screws) during the tailgate.  On the way home we let other drivers enjoy its sweet midi tune.  However one car of greasy 16-year-olds wasn't amused.  They did all they could to get away from the bus and the repetitive song, but I was too formitable an opponent.  You see I spent the week in Seattle for business playing on my friend's xBox 360.  We played Need for Speed most wanted, and I used those skills to keep the kids boxed in.  Luckily we caught every light, where they were held hostage to my siren song.  It was quite fun, especially when he reved his engine at me at a light.  I dropped the puppy in nuetral and treated him to the jasper engine's growl.  You could smell the urine as he wet himself.  We won that battle.

That's all for this week...I'll try to blog later before the game to give you the story of the Gator Gala, of which the pics are already up.  Go Gators!

    UK v UF 2006

Heading back from the stadium after a long day of tailgating and football, we were charged.  Charged with a DWA.  That's right.  Driving While Awesome.  And there was no room for reasonable doubt.  We were guilty.

Just as the beer stepped up, as we went from Bud Light to Yuenling, so to did the tailgate.  I'm not sure if it was due to our improved rankings, or to the great bbq.  Maybe it was the crystal clear HD picture on the big screen, or the ice cold adult beverages.  My guess?  The people.  The crowd on hand was the biggest and the best we've had...at least so far!

Let me catch you up on the past couple of weeks.  Tailgate number one, while fun, taught us how to be better people.  As a result we've made improvements to the keg so it works as you'd expect.  Next we improved the A/V setup with an HD antenna and we made the speakers even louder.  We found in week one that no one was spending time in the bus.  We figured the table was in the way, so we added legs that allow the table to work outside the bus as we party.  Then it pops back in for the ride home.  Ingenious.

I guess word spread about the upgrades after the UCF rout.  The fans came out in droves to partake in the festivities.  Geoff brought some great food from Sonny's, the beer was cold and fresh, and there were some great games on TV.  Newell, our tailgating neighbor to the North (or our "Canada" as I like to think of him) decided to improve the setting by trimming the overgrown bushes around our parking spaces.  I swear that man must be part Mexican, because he sure knows how to handle a hedge trimmer.  That, of course, is a joke.  Stereotypes have no place in my blog, and for that I apologize.  But seriously...he's a hell of a bush trimmer.

That's when the party took an odd yet amusing turn.  Newell went behind a truck to dispose of the clippings.  I'm not sure what made him peer in to the cab of the truck, but something told him to look.  What he saw was so disturbing.  It was erotic.  It was beautiful.  It was nauseating.

We all took turns parading past the junk in the truck.  Apparently the gentleman driving had pulled in to the full-service lane.  We made some passes with the camera (damn the limo tint and glare).  When we'd seen all we could handle, we decided to wait.  It was like standing in applause after the curtain drops at a broadway show, waiting in excitement for the lead performers to take one final bow.  The only difference is instead of being talented actors in a majestic playhouse, this was a ho in a dodge pickup.  I guess that simile wasn't exactly on point, but I stand by it.  It's how I felt, and I'm not going to hide that.

Anyhow, the pair emerged to a roaring round of applause.  The embarrasment we excpected was instead a gleaming sense of pride.  We all had photos with the lovely lady, and she told us stories of cocaine abuse and apparently all-u-can-eat establishments.  She was a healthy girl who likely would've suceeded in plus-size modeling if it weren't for her face.

So that was the fun.  And it was all capped off with another good win as we continue on the road towards being screwed by the BCS.  Two more consecutive weeks at home await and next week promises to be even better than the last. Newell is bringing a full bar and a DJ.  Hope to see you there!

    Game One in the Books

Well, it took me until almost a week after game one to recover enough to update the blog.  Last week was a very long week getting ready, and after some hiccups, the party was great!

First off, last week featured not one but two all-nighters.  First Vince and I saw the sunrise after paiting the second logo on the passenger side.  Then there was Friday night.  With under 24 hours until game time we still had to install the TV mount, the dish on the roof, internal and external speakers, and the new AC.  Oh yeah, we got a new AC.  And a new generator. You see, the previous generator had a decibel level somewhere between commercial airliner and hungry two-year-old.  Between that and its curb weight of roughly 800 pounds (give or take 600lbs), it wasn't a viable option.  We now have a whisper quiet kipor electric generator that many people didn't even notice was running at the tailgate!  Problem is the new generator lacked the juice to run the massive overkill AC we had purchased even with nothinkg else plugged in!  So Megan and I figured out a way to mount a window style AC unit in the bus without taking out a window.  I'll grab some pics of the setup tonight, but all credit goes to Megan for the ingenious idea!

So anyhow, Megan and I called it a night at 4am on Saturday after the dish was up and working.  Vince burned the midnight oil as Joy stayed up to launch the GoGatorNation.com Web site that our company worked on (check the site out after the Tenn game with its new design and functionality).  When we joined back up at about 9am Vince had gone above and beyond, wiring awesome outdoor speakers that bookend the TV.  We packed up and rode to the stadium with speakers blaring outside and in.  It was a great feeling.  Lots of honks and waves made it a fun drive.

When we got to the parking lot we had to contend with a 12" curb but eventually got her parked as you see in the pics.  We quickly setup the TV and raised the dish to the required heading.  No signal.  We tried all nearby headings.  No signal.  I stood on the roof and ripped down enough branches to build my very own wigwam, and still no signal.  It was a cable commercial if I've ever seen one.  Finally we moved the entire bus about a foot to the left and the signal came to 75%.  Crazy.

Next hurdle was the keg.  We setup the dual tap system with one inside and one out.  However both were just dispensing foam.  After spending about a half hour changing pressures and checking seals, we went to the backup hand pump tap.  The problem was diagnosed and fixed this week, and turned out to be these weird valves in the connectors I bought that were gumming up the works.  We're going to set it up early tonight with the dual taps to make sure we're good and will just keep the fridge plugged in to the extension cord in my house.

So once we got beer and had the TV working, it was time to relax.  We gave a bunch of tours to friends, coworkers, family, and perfect strangers.  We popped opened the bbq feast we had won at a silent charity auction from Sonny's.  It was advertised as a feast for 20 people including ribs, chicken, turkey, and pulled pork along with mac and cheese, slaw, bread, baked beans, and sweet tea.  Well I don't know who those 20 people are that they are expecting to feed, but we fed about 30, ended up inviting neighboring tailgaters over, and I've eaten bbq for the entire week at home!

Now that we have one under our belt, setup should go much easier.  We know how to get a dish signal right away, mount the TV, etc.  We're going to experiment with orienting the bus a bit differently in the parking spot to maximize our shade time.  I think we'll all be able to relax a bit more this time around knowing that everything works.

As always, please feel free to join us tomorrow for the game.  We'll be in the same lot between 15th and 16th on university ave.  Have a beer and watch some pregame with us.  Go Gators!

    Tailgate Location and Time Set

There's not enough room for all of you in the short bus, but come and meet us at the tailgate.

This Saturday will be the 1st official tailgate of the Urban-Transit bus. If all goes as planned we will be tailgating from noon until game time at the corner of NW 15th Terr. and University Ave. This is where the Burger King used to be and is now just a parking lot. You won't be able to miss the bus. (Note the Map Below)

Tailgating will include all things Gator (minus the jean shorts*) - Sonny's, BudLight on tap, TVs to watch the day's games, a blender to make your frozen beverages, etc etc. We'll even have air conditioning.

    —-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    * for those of you unfamiliar with the jean shorts reference - our rivals tend to mock the laid back football attire of many Gator fans. We will not mock you for such an outfit, however Southern Miss just might.

    —-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We hope to see you there - and of course, please bring friends.

YOU MAY WANT TO BRING A CHAIR TOO...

    T-Minus One Week!

It is crunch time, friends and neighbors.  Football season kicks off at 6pm this Saturday for Florida fans.  Those of us on the tailgate team expect kick off around 11am that same day. Just like the players, we've worked hard preparing for the season with this past two weeks as evidence.

After getting the bus back from the shop with her new innards, we got straight to work.  That night we installed the bar/kegerator box, rear console, and upholstered seats that you can see in the photo albums.  Megan and I also finished some trim on the stairs and in front as well as finished up painting the dashboard in orange.

About a week ago Megan and I worked on some of the beautification by installing the destination signs on the front and rear to replace the "School Bus" signs.  The front features a Gators logo, while the rear touts this very Web site.  The signs look great!

After spending the week traveling for business with my new best friend, "Kidney Stone," I was very happy to get back to the bus.  Joy and Vince had attached the rear hitch and gathered all the supplies for wiring.  They also did a ton of research on the best process to paint the logos on the sides of the bus.  With that knowledge in hand, we started that project over this last weekend.  After some trial and error we ended up with the driver's side looking amazing!  Check out the photos.

Now we need your opinion.  Should we do the same gator head logo on the other side since it looks so sharp, or should we vary it up with the Gators script logo or some other insignia?  Please feel free to email or leave a comment with your opinion.  We'd love to hear it!

So now we're in crunch time.  This week we need to finish the second logo and get all the electronics in place.  We're planning a scrimage for this Thursday's Sec opener between South Carolina and Mississippi State on ESPN.  That way we can work out all of the kinks before gameday.

I'll be sure to post some more this week as much will be taking place.  Thanks for your interest!
